Day 1

We met at school bright and early at 6:00am, and were soon on our way to Belgium. We thought that two students were missing, but one turned out to be asleep at the back of the coach, and so was not answering to her name.

The other had missed two alarm calls, and two phone calls from school staff, but eventually caught up with us at Ferrybridge Service Station.

Once in Belgium we visited Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Poperinge, to look for the grave of John Thackray Byers, an old boy of Harrogate Grammar School who died on Saturday 10 November 1917 aged 19. He was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

The photographs include the tribute we left at the grave.

A long day ended with a talk and video from Peter Crook preparing us for Sunday's visits in the Ypres area.
