Source 3: And then there was one....
A collection of
photos and one painting showing Stalin's elimination of
his rivals in the 1920s and 1930s.
- From left to right this picture shows Nikolai
Antipov, Stalin, Sergei Kirov and Nikolai Shvernik
in 1926.
- This 1940 version of the picture shows
Antipov having been airbrushed out of history. Stalin
had him arrested and shot. Not content with eliminating
the man, Stalin also eliminated the memory of Antipov.
Many others were later to suffer a similar fate during
Stalin's purges of the Communist Party in the 1930s.
- In 1949, only Kirov remains in the picture
and he had been murdered by Stalin in 1933.
- Finally, Stalin can be seen standing alone
in a painting based on the original 1926 picture.
It is as though the original picture had never existed.
