6th Century First Saxon kings
860s Vikings from Norway invade England and settle in the North.
1016 The Viking King Cnut becomes King of England
1040-42 King Cnut's son, Harthacanute, is King
1042 Edward the Confessor seizes the throne when Harthacanute dies in suspicious circumstances.
1051 Harold, Earl of Wessex, rebels against Edward. The rebellion is defeated with the help of William, Duke of Normandy. Harold is driven out of the country.
1052 Harold allowed to return to England
1064 Harold visits Normandy
1066 Edward the Confessor dies.
